"Life!" I shouted, "you're going too fast. You'll exhaust yourself too soon, and me too!"
But he kept going, not listening, never looking back.
"Where's he rushing to?" I asked in frustration, no one in particular.
I looked around to see if someone would join me to call out to him to stop his reckless hurry, or at least warn him for me, the dangers of his precipitate speed, but the more I looked around me, the more I saw that everyone was distracted, too distracted to notice how dangerously fast Life was carrying on in front of me.
"Life stop! I can't keep up!" I shouted one more time. "Aren't we supposed to go together?"
Was he deaf? He simply wasn't listening. He just kept going.
Then I realised I might lose him altogether if I didn't run after and try to keep pace with him. I gathered my garment about me and hastened my steps. If only he would but look back just once, he would see how much his frenzied motion was frustrating me.
Life never looked back, not even once, to see how I was doing.
I needed help, any help, to slow Life down to my convenient pace, but I didnt dare to look back myself, lest I lose sight of him altogether.
So I looked to my left and to my right for help to stop Life and bring him back to me, but everyone I saw was in a frenzy of their own, in tiresome pursuit of their own fleeing Life.
"You're on your own, mate," the neighbour to my left spared just a moment to let me know.
"Yes," the one panting at my right concurred, catching his breath. "Just keep after him," he counseled, pointing at Life who appeared to gain even more momentum in those fleeting moments I looked to my left and right.
What to do? So I filled my lungs with air and kept going, in pursuit of Life.
