The coolest thing that ever happened to my writing is retiring from active and paid work. Engineering career pursuit for 32 years—with three professional Fellowships along the way—kept the writer in me quiet. Then came 2012 when I formally shed my coverall and hard hat...the writer in me was finally liberated! Since then, I have not looked back. I believe we are writers by nature—everyone has something to share with posterity, but they must first be set free. Cemeteries are sad repositories of unwritten books and I am determined to not forget that.
Certain things push you to act in certain ways. To my faculty mate at university, Engineer Anefiok, the reviewer of the first manuscript I ever wrote—and that was more than some forty-five years ago—I owe much thanks for running a red pen across what I'd written after describing it as laughable. That no-nonsense review immobilised me for decades, but it certainly taught me how not to write. Today, when I type a sentence, I warn myself, “Remember Anefiok!”
Along with writing has emerged another part of me that I never knew—teaching success and self-development as a life coach to careerists in secular, corporate, and christian circles.
My writing comes from within. There is nothing I write or teach that I haven't first experienced firsthand. That is what powers my teaching and speaking at seminars and public fora. Our most sincere offering comes from within us. I want to leave a bit of me as a legacy for humanity.
